In the early morning hours of February 9, 2012, Shining Path leader Comrade Artemio was injured during a confrontation in the San Martín region of Peru (left image). Artemio has been a wanted man for some time, being one of the last bosses of the Maoist terrorist group Shining Path to remain at large.

It was a surreal moment, befitting of North Korea, when a news anchor announced the death of Kim Jong Il.Against a dreamy backdrop of lush green forests and snow-covered mountains (no doubt a metaphor for Jong Il’s ascension to a better place), the black-clad anchor read the news, fighting back the tears, as if she were giving a eulogy for a close friend.
North Korea has issued a warning to South Korea over lighting up of Christmas trees near the border, defining the act as “initiating psychological warfare”.
New Peruvian President Ollanta Humala in the traditional clothing of the people of Calacoa. At the end of his first 100 days in power, commentators are reviewing his term so far.
