Welcome to another edition of the Global Voices podcast.

The topic this month is global social media campaigns: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

[Asiana Airline’s] guidelines on appearance and uniform even regulate the number of bobby pins they can use, which color eye makeup to use and even the color of their stockings. Since glasses are not allowed to be worn inside the cabin, they have to wear contact lenses in that dry environment. The right to wear short hairstyles was one they fought for and achieved through a strike few years ago. It is a clear indication how the company views their female labor force and its desire to control and utilize it.
This International Women’s Day, female flight attendants of Asiana Airlines, one of the South Korea’s major airlines, held a press conference campaigning for the right to wear trousers to work, amongst other demands.

Fifteen year old Victoria Castro from El Salvador was one of 72 migrants massacred in Mexico while trying to get to the United States. 

She tells her story in this video through Diana García, a Mexican actress, as part of a call for citizen media videos, in the hope that viewers will take the time to research the story of one of Mexico’s victims of violence and tell their story.

“Ever since the company Reñaca Concón S.A. (Reconsa) started its efforts to build a real-state complex on the delicate and unique ecosystem of the Concon Dunes neighbors began their struggle to prevent this development. On December 27, 2011, their worst nightmare became a reality: the construction company began erecting a fence around the protected area.”

Several empty chairs in Iran’s universities were formerly occupied by students who have now vanished. Some are deprived of education for religious reasons, such as members of the persecuted Baha’i religious minority, others have been jailed for political activities, killed in the street, or forced to leave Iran. In the best of circumstances, students have merely been expelled.

Aberash Hailay is an Ethiopian Airlines flight attendant whose ex-husband, Fisseha Tadesse, stabbed both her eyes with a knife in Bangkok, Thailand. 
Ethiopian activists are using the Internet to call for justice for Aberash Hailay and draw attention to issues of violence against women in Ethiopia.
